Beso de Maria
The phrase "Beso de Maria" literally means, "Mary's Kiss." This outreach to very poor single mothers began through a very generous donation from a parishioner of one of the diocesan parishes on Cape Cod. The donor, a mother herself, and very dedicated to the sanctity of human life, especially of the unborn, has made it possible for us to offer care to newborn infants in their first months of life.
In our area many babies are born to single mothers who already have a number of children. This reality puts the newborn at a particularly high risk for contracting illness or death as an infant due to malnutrition. In order to address this need and help newborn infants have a fighting chance at life, we have established a project called "El Beso de Maria", or "Mary's Kiss" to honor the maternal role of Mary, the Mother of God.
A team of volunteers will assess the needs of the newborn infant, visiting their home and talking to the mother. The needy mother then will receive baby formula, bottles and cloth diapers, vitamins and infant clothing for the first six months of the baby's life. If at the end of that time, there is still a need the child will receive the needed care for one year.
The goal of this outreach is to teach families that human life is a gift from God and merits our full attention, love, and care.
We are profoundly grateful for the donation to fund this project and invite those who wish to make a contribution to contact the Office of the Propagation of the Faith to make their donation.
