Pope John Paul II Scholarship
When the mission began in the parish of St. Rose of Lima, many young people were not able to receive an education because families had many children and parents could not afford to send them all to school. With the help of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the School Bag Project, the parish was able to help parents send their children to school.
The majority of them graduate from school but do not think beyond a high school education. Their poverty is not only a poverty of "things" but also a poverty of imagination. They cannot imagine a better life, a different way of living. Though we have tried to broaden horizons, there is much work to be done.
There are a few, however, who work closely with the pairsh and have had contact with the college students who visit the mission. These young peple have seen how college students interact, offer service, and plan their futures. Now, some of our parish young people have begun to dream.
When Father David Pignato visited with Bishop Coleman, he saw the need to promote education. With the help of some friends, he began the John Paul II Scholarship as a way to educate the youth. The program continues, the youth are in need and we are asking for your help. Here in Honduras a college education is not as costly as back in the States. For approximately $150 a month, a young person can get a college education.
Please consider sharing the gift of education with the poor. Consider making a donation to the John Paul II Scholarship which helps parish young people get to college.
If you, or your parish, would like to sponsor a student in college, or make a donation to the Scholarship Program, send a check (payable to "Honduran Mission") to the Propagation of the Faith Office, 106 Illinois Street, New Bedford, MA 02745. Note on the check that it is for the John Paul II Scholarship. For more information, contact Father Craig at the Mission.
May God bless you for your kindness!
